To celebrate the arrival of 2017, my friends and I checked out the free festivities at the Old Port. I’ve spent many New Year’s Eves on a sofa with the remote control watching the ball drop in Times Square and fireworks around the world. This time, I decided it would be a good start to the New Year to get off the sofa, put on the long underwear, and brave the cold and the crowds.
We decided to have supper in Chinatown where the restaurants are guaranteed to be open and not overpriced. We decided on Jade Garden, a buffet restaurant that offers dim sum, Chinese-Canadian and traditional Chinese dishes and pizza. The restaurant was doing brisk business and we were seated quickly.
By the time we left the restaurant and started walking to Old Montreal, crowds of people were streaming out of the metro and heading the same way. Here we are below in front of Notre Dame Church. It was snowing lightly and not as cold as I thought it would be.
I wasn’t the only one taking pictures of the church still decked out in Christmas lights.
After having our bags checked at the entrance to the Old Port, we wandered around, dancing to the music that was playing before the main event began. We took advantage of the free cans of Coke and McDonald’s coffee that was being handed out. Lots of people went skating on the rink.
Over at the main stage, a huge crowd gathered to listen to local DJs, and French and English bands.
As it got closer to midnight, the number of people in the Old Port, on Notre Dame Street and Place Jacques Cartier was massive. Just before midnight, in a tribute to Leonard Cohen, the crowd joined in as the musicians on stage sang Hallelujeh.
The fireworks were great! I managed to capture most of it in the video below. Whether you spent New Year’s Eve at home or out on the town, I hope you had a good one.
I wish everyone all the best for 2017!
