Yes folks, that is a picture of John Barrowman in Lieutenant Uhura’s dress and black size 13 pumps. Barrowman (Torchwood, Doctor Who and Arrow) was a Guest of Honour at this year’s Montreal Comiccon. He was wildly improper and funny, especially when telling stories of outrageous pranks he played on set. The audience loved him.
I went to Comiccon on Saturday with my friend and editor, Virginia Modugno, who is a big sci-fi and fantasy fan. I don’t watch many of these shows whereas she seems to knows every detail and all the actors and the roles they’ve played. My sci-fi knowledge starts with Star Trek (the television series) and ends with Star Wars (the first 3 movies only).
Not knowing much means everything is a discovery. One gem was the panel on the web series LARPs: The Series (Live Action Role Play) which is produced in Montreal. After the first season, they partnered with Felicia Day’s company, Geek & Sundry to produce season two. It was a lively panel made up of the actors, producers, the writer and the director of the show. They got along so well with each other and seemed to have so much fun making the show that I will have to check it out on Geek & Sundry’s YouTube channel.
Gwendoline Christie of Game of Thrones talked about her acting career and how she was hired for the show. I’ve only seen the first season so far (I love it), so I was lost when she talked about what was happening with her character, the warrior Brienne of Tarth. The audience was told not to ask her questions about her role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens as some Hollywood forces would not appreciate it.
One of my favorite TV series is Once Upon A Time. I caught the Q & A with two actors who played minor recurring roles, Giancarlo Esposito (Breaking Bad) and Raphael Sbarge (Mass Effect). There were a lot of questions from the audience about the show’s story line. If you were wondering how the characters from Frozen ended up in the show, basically the creator of Frozen offered them to the producers and they said yes. Both Esposito, who was the face in the mirror, and Sbarge, who was Archie Hopper/Jiminy Cricket, would love to come back to the show, but there isn’t any plan at the moment.
And, what would Comiccon be without the fans all dressed up as their favorite characters? The brother of one of my best friends just happens to look like Walter White in Breaking Bad. Here he is below with two other fans of the show.
Below are some other fans in some amazing costumes. If anybody knows the names of any of these characters, feel free to post it in comments!
