The Ancestral Ceremony

The weather on Sunday seemed more appropriate for October than June, but it didn’t stop the Chinese Association of Montreal from holding its annual Ceremony of the Ancestors in Chinatown yesterday.

In the photos below, fake money is burned as an offering to the ancestors just outside the offices of one family association.

Below, Lion Dancers walk down La Gauchetiere Street  towards Sun Yat Sen Park to the beat of a drum.

Offerings of food, flowers and incense are placed on the altar.

After the ceremony was over, it was time for local talent to shine.

I was invited to the closing banquet in the evening, a ten course meal that included lobster, deep fried shrimp, Cantonese chow mein, seafood soup and more. Sorry, I didn’t take photos. I was too busy eating! 🙂
